The short answer

Wait briefly, then find out whether one app or the entire computer is frozen. Close only the affected app when possible. Force the computer off only when ordinary recovery controls do not respond.

Before you begin

Ending an app or forcing power off can lose unsaved work. Do not interrupt a BIOS or firmware update. If a recovery key is requested after restarting, use your own account or administrator to retrieve it.

Give the computer a chance to respond

A large file, update or temporary resource shortage can look like a freeze. Wait a few minutes if there is visible progress. Avoid repeatedly clicking, since queued clicks can trigger unwanted actions when the system recovers.

Check whether the pointer moves, audio continues, or another window responds. If this is a remote session, verify the local connection before assuming the remote computer itself has stopped.

Recover one stuck application

If other apps work, keep them open and save their documents. Treat the unresponsive application separately rather than restarting the whole computer.

  1. Try Esc once to close a stuck dialog, then attempt the app’s normal close button.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Locate the unresponsive app by name.
  3. Select that app and choose End task only after accepting that its unsaved work may be lost. Avoid ending unknown system processes.
  4. Reopen the app and check its document recovery or autosave feature. Save recovered work under a new name before continuing.

If the whole desktop stops responding

Try Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen opens, use its power control to restart after considering unsaved work. A keyboard that does not respond may also be disconnected or have a flat battery; try a wired keyboard if available.

For a blank or apparently frozen display while Windows is still active, Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B can reset the graphics driver. It is a display troubleshooting step, not a general repair for every freeze.

If no controls respond, hold the physical power button until the device switches off, then wait briefly and start it again. The required hold time varies by device. This is a last resort because open files or filesystem activity may be interrupted.

Investigate a recurring freeze

After restart, copy important files to a backup before stress-testing the machine. Record the time of each incident and what was open. Look for a pattern: a particular app, waking from sleep, connecting a dock, or getting hot during a video call.

Update the affected app through its own updater. Apply ordinary Windows updates and official manufacturer driver updates when appropriate. Avoid changing several drivers at once; a new problem is harder to trace that way.

Use Task Manager while the computer is responsive to watch workload. If freezes happen with crowded memory or sustained disk activity, reduce the workload and compare. If they happen even with little open, software conflicts or hardware problems need closer investigation.

Know when to stop retrying

Disconnect optional accessories one at a time after safely ejecting storage when possible. If one device consistently triggers the problem, check its cable and official driver support.

Unusual heat, repeated shutdowns, clicking storage or disk errors require caution. Continued forced restarts can worsen a data problem. A technician can run model-specific memory and storage diagnostics; tell them which files must be preserved.

A Windows reset should not be the first reaction to a freeze. Before any recovery procedure, confirm the backup can be opened and understand which apps and files the selected option removes. If this is a managed computer, ask its administrator to handle recovery.

If the PC responds again but remains sluggish, use our slow-computer diagnosis to identify the bottleneck.
