The short answer

Windows 10 still runs after its ordinary support ended on October 14, 2025. For ongoing use, check eligibility for Microsoft’s current Extended Security Updates program or move to a supported operating system on compatible hardware.

Before you begin

Before upgrading or replacing a computer, verify your backup and recovery key. Do not bypass Windows 11 hardware requirements just to dismiss a warning without understanding the support consequences.

What ended, and what did not

Microsoft’s ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That does not remotely disable your PC or erase your documents. It changes the support and update arrangement for the operating system.

A browser or antivirus program receiving updates does not establish that Windows itself is covered. Check operating-system coverage separately from app support. Similarly, a computer working normally today does not tell you whether it is receiving the security fixes it needs.

Check your actual device and coverage

At this article’s publication, Microsoft’s official end-of-support page lists consumer Extended Security Updates coverage through October 12, 2027. Availability, enrollment requirements and regional conditions should be checked directly with Microsoft because programs can change.

Do not assume enrollment happened automatically, or that a previous payment covers every machine. Read the current program information for your account and device. Employer-managed devices may use different arrangements; ask the organization’s administrator.

  1. Open Settings > System > About and record the Windows edition and version.
  2. Open Windows Update and inspect its messages and recent update history.
  3. Use the official Microsoft program link below to review current eligibility and enrollment options.
  4. Confirm coverage for each computer you intend to keep using. Save the confirmation in your own records.

See whether the existing computer can move to Windows 11

Use Microsoft’s compatibility guidance and the computer manufacturer’s support information for the exact model. An older PC with plenty of RAM may still be missing another required component or supported processor.

Check the programs and accessories you depend on before upgrading. A specialist printer, accounting package or older scanner may determine whether the transition needs extra preparation. Confirm that its vendor supports your intended operating system.

If Windows Update offers a supported upgrade, plan it for a time when the computer can be unavailable. Connect reliable power and keep your backup separate. Do not start during urgent work simply because a notification appears.

If the hardware is not eligible

Compare keeping the PC under an available supported security arrangement with replacing it. Include storage, required apps, accessibility needs and support in the total cost. A refurbished business computer can be worth considering if the seller clearly identifies the model, warranty and supported Windows installation.

Another operating system may suit basic browsing or documents, but check software and hardware compatibility first. Installing a different system can erase the current drive. Trying a new platform should be a deliberate migration, with a recovery plan, rather than an improvised troubleshooting experiment.

Make a migration checklist before spending money

List the files you need, where they live, the apps you must reinstall and how you sign into important accounts. Include browser bookmarks, email archives and any data outside ordinary Documents and Pictures folders.

Open sample files from your backup on another device if possible. Confirm that passwords or recovery codes are available through a secure method. A backup you cannot restore is not a completed migration plan.

When the replacement is working, sign out of accounts and follow the manufacturer’s erase procedure before selling or recycling the old machine. Keep the old storage secure until you have verified your files and applications on the new setup.
