Check the exact update error, restart normally, verify the connection and available storage, then run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter. Avoid downloading random update-fix scripts or deleting system folders as an opening step.
Back up important files before advanced repairs. Keep a laptop connected to reliable power during installation. Do not switch off a computer that is actively installing firmware.
Record what Windows is telling you
Open Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Note the update name, any KB number and the full error code.
Separate download failure, installation failure, pending restart and a device reaching end of support. They are different situations. If an organization manages updates, its policy may intentionally control when you receive them; contact the administrator rather than bypassing it.
Try the low-risk checks
An update may fail because the computer was asleep, the connection dropped or another restart was needed. Fix those conditions before assuming Windows is damaged.
- Save documents and use Start > Power > Restart. Reopen Windows Update afterward.
- Confirm that ordinary websites load. If the connection is unstable, fix that first; try a stable approved network rather than repeatedly restarting a failed download.
- Check Settings > System > Storage. Follow Windows’ request for additional room, reviewing cleanup categories before deleting anything.
- Set the correct date, time and time zone through Settings. Incorrect clock settings can interfere with secure online services.
- Disconnect nonessential accessories after saving work and safely ejecting external storage, then retry the update.
Use the official troubleshooter and error guidance
Open the Get Help app and look for the Windows Update troubleshooter, or follow the current Microsoft instructions linked below. The exact interface can change between Windows versions. Read any repair proposal before accepting it.
Retry Windows Update afterward and check Update history. A successful installation should be confirmed there, rather than inferred from a disappearing notification. If a new error appears, record it separately.
Use the exact code on Microsoft’s official support site to narrow the next action. An update intended for one Windows version or processor architecture is not interchangeable with another. Do not download standalone installers from a third-party mirror.
What if installation seems stuck?
Update time varies with hardware, connection and the size of the update. A percentage staying unchanged briefly is not proof it has frozen. Allow time, especially if there is visible activity or the computer says not to turn it off.
If it repeatedly returns to the desktop with the same failed update, use the error-based path above. If it repeatedly fails to start Windows, stop normal update retries and use the manufacturer or Microsoft recovery guidance.
Avoid using a forced shutdown merely to hurry an update. If the device has been unresponsive for a prolonged period, get advice for that exact state and model; a firmware update needs different handling from a stuck app.
Before advanced repair or reinstallation
Microsoft documents command-line repairs for some update problems. These require the right commands, administrator access and an understanding of the result. Ask a reputable technician for help if you cannot confidently identify what the instructions change.
Have a verified backup, account sign-in details and the BitLocker or device-encryption recovery key available before recovery work. Never post that key in a public support forum.
For Windows 10, verify whether your device is eligible and enrolled in a current extended security program. Ordinary support ending is not repaired by a cleaner utility. If an upgrade is the right path, confirm compatibility and preserve your data before proceeding.
